Yes. I just found out I lost the 16-week challenge. I worked my tail off. Ate super clean. Got up at 4:30am and worked out everyday. I didn’t cheat. Not once. I wrote a badass essay. I had a professional photographer come to my house and take my pictures. I even got a spray tan! I thought that I was a shoe in for my company finals.
Then Saturday came and went. I didn’t get a call. I thought maybe it would come a few days later. I waited some more. I texted some of my friends to see if they heard anything. Then…I saw it. The blog that featured the 5 finalists. And I wasn’t on it. Have you had that happen to you? Where you tried your best and it wasn’t good enough?
I’ll admit it. I was disappointed. Discouraged. I had done my best. Yes I only lost 4 lbs. But I really didn’t have anything to lose. I dropped my BMI from 24 to 16 and I had ABS!! For the first time in my life at age 39 I looked ripped. And yet it wasn’t meant to be.
Here’s where I’d like to suggest a few tips that have helped me maintain positive outlook and emotional sanity in times when things weren’t going my way, or so I thought. I’ve recorded them in a brief video and summarize them below.
1. Do the best you can in all situations.
When you are putting forth your best effort, when you are doing all that you can to make what you think is supposed to happen happen, then you can be proud that you have done something great.
The journey is more important than the destination. We heard that so many times but truly, it is. Who are you becoming by putting forth the effort towards a worthy goal? I recently pushed for a 16-week challenge hoping to make it into the finals of my company’s event. I got in the best shape of my life. I dropped my BMI from 24 to 16. I took off four pounds. I had a professional photoshoot and looked amazing and I didn’t make the finals but guess what, I did my best and I’m proud of that. You can be proud of your best too.
2. Look towards the future and know you don’t have the answers.
Why did I not make the finals? I believe it’s because God has other plans for me that I don’t know about yet. Maybe the time commitment or the travel or some other aspect of winning this competition would have been too much for me at this point in time. Maybe someone else is more deserving of winning and that’s fine too.
Maybe while I’m at our company event, there are things I need to be available for that I wouldn’t be had I been a part of this competition. I don’t know why but I do know that I don’t see the future with a magic ball, a crystal ball so I trust that when I’ve done my best, I can let go of the details.
3. Continue to plant seeds AND let go of the end results.
As long as I am in alignment with the fruits of the spirit, which are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self-control, as long as I am focused on those things, I know that the harvest will be good.
I might not be able to predict the harvest or when it will come or what exactly it will look like but that is not my business. That is God’s business, so I stay focused on what I can do today to make my life great and to sow seeds of greatness in others. That is truly what life is about. Sow the seeds. Let go of the harvest.
If you are experiencing things like frustration, feeling overwhelmed, feeling discouraged or anything like that, I believe it’s because you are messing with God’s business. Focus more on the journey and embrace the person you are becoming because of the things you are doing. That is truly the point. Trust TIMING. It is everything.
A good book to read is Mike Dooley’s Leveraging the Universe. He talks about playing the matrix and not messing with the cursed hows but focusing on the feelings and focus on the seeds that you’re planting. I love that book. I hope this has helped you today to find greatness in yourself and to trust God’s timing. All things are working for the good.
Well, I guess good enough is good enough. Doing what I knew to do and trusting God’s plan is what is in order. I’ll admit it can be difficult when you want something really bad, or when you’ve worked really hard or when you feel you’ve done everything you can and the details don’t turn out the way you thought they would.
The good news is…looking back on my life thus far, I can see that some of the things I truly wanted to happen that didn’t happen was the best thing that could have happened. I can see that some of the things I didn’t plan at all, that seemed unwanted at the time, ended up being the best thing for me. Maybe that will be true for you too.
