So be strong and courageous!
Do not be afraid and do not panic before them.
For the
Lord your God will personally go ahead of you.
He will neither fail you nor abandon you.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Changing is hard. Growing is hard. Becoming more self-aware and God-conscious is hard. God did not promise life would be easy. Did He?

As I’ve been travelling this path lately lots of fears are surfacing for me. Questions swirl around in my head like:

  • What if I’m off track? Am I being ‘too extreme’ with my pursuit of personal growth?
  • What if I keep cultivating this relationship with God and it starts to interfere with my life as I know it?
  • Maybe it was better to just live as I was? Why am I rocking the boat in so many areas?
  • Is it me rocking the boat or is it just the process of awakening where you are actually now aware that the boat is rocking and before that, you didn’t even know you were on a boat?
  • Am I willing to trust God and have courage to trust that He loves me and would never leave me?

And we all feel more comfortable with guarantees. Right? We’ll buy the product with the money-back guarantee. We’ll choose the one with the lifetime guarantee. Why? There’s no risk involved. So we can easily say YES.

Life is not like that. It requires a tolerance for risk and a lot of faith. If you are going to truly live, that is. But there are some things we can know for sure.

These are the God guarantees. God will never leave me or forsake me. He who called me is faithful also to do it. God’s ways are higher than my ways. Jesus came to give life and to give it more abundantly. We walk by faith not by sight.

And they are constantly at war in our hearts with the earthly guarantees. The world promises that we are born and we will die. The world promises a lot of pain and suffering in between those two moments. The world will press us to decide our lives based on fear. Don’t rock the boat.

What are we really afraid of? Fear of rejection. People won’t like us or approve of what we are doing. Fear of abandonment. People will leave us and we won’t be okay. Fear of lack. We won’t have enough, God won’t provide for our needs. Fear of failure. If I try something new or follow God’s plan for me it won’t work out and I’ll look like a fool.

God guarantees the sun will rise and the sun will set. God guarantees He will love us with an everlasting love that cannot be revoked. God guarantees that His love will get us through anything. He is an ever-present help in time of trouble.

So we have nothing to fear. We don’t need to hold on tightly. We can wear life like a loose garment. We require nothing of anyone. We rely on God’s love and are secure in His plan for us.

What we can do is take life one day at a time. We don’t need to make drastic claims like “I will never do this or I will always do that.” We can relax and do the next right thing.

Just for today I…

Just for today I will love God with reckless abandon.

Just for today I will listen when God speaks and try my best to carry out His will.

Just for today I will treat myself with kindness and feed my body with nourishing food.

Just for today I will choose not to drink and maintain my sobriety.

Just for today I will love my spouse and invest in our relationship.

Just for today I will show up for my girls and offer them my time and attention.

Just for today I will do what I can to grow my business.

Just for today I will be open to meeting new people and lending a helping hand.

Just for today I will weather the storms I may face with grace and faith.

Just for today I will remember to pray when I don’t know what else to do.

Just for today.

This is my guarantee from God. I have one more day. I can choose to live in faith or succumb to fear. I can choose to walk in His love or try to make in on my own. I can choose to trust that He has a plan for me…just for today.

That is what I will do.

I’ll leave you with one of my favorite passages from Matthew 6 where Jesus is offering a word of encouragement.

“That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? 27 Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?

28 “And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, 29 yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. 30 And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?

31 “So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ 32 These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. 33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

34 “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.

This is how I want to live, with the trust that God is with me TODAY. I have no idea what tomorrow will bring. I’m not even guaranteed tomorrow. So I’ll just stick with today.

One. Day. At. A. Time.
