Remove Your Protective Covering

“Women are like tea bags, they don’t know how strong they are until they get into hot water.”  ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

I am sure you have heard this quote before.  But here is another twist on it that I learned from my 8-year-old, Sadie, this afternoon.  I heated up a cup of water for my afternoon Passion Tea and asked her if she would put in the tea bag for me, as I was busy doing another task.  After I finished with what I was doing, I came back and saw my cup of hot water sitting there with a tea bag in it that was still inside its packaging!  🙂  I had to laugh at that.  I didn’t tell her that she had to rip open the package and that the tea bag was inside.  So as it was, there was no tea, just a cup of hot water with a tea bag sitting inside its protective covering floating in it.  The water could not penetrate the cover.

Isn’t that a metaphor for life though?  I started to think….  How many of us never realize our strength when we get into hot water because we are afraid to remove our protective covering.   Maybe it is a successful career that you dislike but feel you need to prove equality with your husband, or a perfectly fit body that is always looking for the approval of others, an organized house that holds no love and feels clean yet empty, or a smile that says to the world, ‘all is well’, when you know it really isn’t.  Maybe you’re afraid that if you show your struggles to someone else you will be rejected.  Without admitting our true feelings, fears or challenges and being real to ourselves and others, we can never find out who we are and taste the strength that resides within us.  Do you know that if you remove your cover you will find beauty inside!  You are perfect as you are today and you don’t need to stay in your perfect package anymore.  Embrace the heat of the water, knowing it will produce something beautiful.

Today I would challenge you to see if you can find a cover you are hiding inside of.  Is it a role?  Perfect mother?  Successful businesswoman?  Is it material possessions?  A nice house?  A new car?  A designer purse?  Is it your physical body and exercising it to perfection?  None of these things are bad, but if they are a front to hide people from the real you, then you know you are not being true to yourself.  By hiding inside your protective cover you will never be all that you were meant to be.  Take off your protective covering and taste the real you.  Do it!  Go ahead and have your tea.
