Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 5:18
Yesterday I said Finding God’s Love is Easy, remember? And by nighttime I was in such a funk I couldn’t find God’s love at all. Is it just me, or is maintaining an attitude of gratitude sometimes really hard?
I was texting with a friend and I said jokingly, “Gratitude sucks,” and if you know me I love making people laugh so I immediately went to google images to search for that term and would you believe NOTHING came up! Not one person had made an image making fun of gratitude. I laughed. I can solve that problem!
So I opened my Word Swag app and I made one and texted it back to her. I had to show you because when I get into a sarcastic mode my comedy skills really shine through.
But truth be told, she’s right. When we can maintain an attitude of gratitude life goes more smoothly. I am alive. I have one more day to experience this wild journey of humanity and I have people I love and who love me back to share it with.
I can walk and breathe fresh air. I have clean water to drink and even a hot cup of coffee (or four) every day. I have access to books and wifi. I can learn anything my mind can conceive. I am sober and have rediscovered God working in me.
Wow. That’s a lot. And I’m just getting started.
What about you? When you’re feeling down or overwhelmed do you tend to focus on the negatives? Do you get stuck in a mental rut thinking of all the things you’d like to change, all the things you have to do, all the ways ‘if you were God’ you’d be running the show differently?
I guess that means we’re just human. And that is why we need a God who is much bigger than us because on our own we cannot deal with life on life’s terms. It seems hopeless and pointless if there is nothing beyond this realm. But knowing that there is a richness to life, and a God who has orchestrated each day with its own lessons and gifts, we can face each situation with gratefulness.
God is working all things together for our good. That is reason to be grateful today.
